Sporting Career

Club level cyclist at road, track, cyclo-cross and mountain biking. Regional road champion in 1971 and still cycles regularly.

Sports Administration Career

  • President of UCI (2013 -2017)
  • President of UCI Road Commission (2011 – 2013)
  • President of UCI Cyclo-Cross Commission (2009 - 2011)
  • Member of UCI Management Committee (2009 – present)
  • Represented cycling on British National Olympic Committee (1997 - 2013)
  • President of British Cycling Federation (1996 - 2013)
  • UCI International Commissaire (1986 - 2009) incl. Olympic Games, multiple World Championships and international stage races
  • Race organiser and official at local and national level 1969-2013

Awards

Awarded OBE for services to cycling in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List, January 2008.

British Cycling

Under Brian’s presidency (1996-2013), British Cycling achieved the following:  

  • Recovery from meltdown and near-bankruptcy to strength and stability
  • Securing of major funding and sponsorships
  • Establishment of structured talent identification, development pathways and academies.
  • Major programmes of investment in facilities – velodromes, road circuits, BMX and MTB.
  • Multiple UCI Road, Track, MTB and BMX World Championship gold medals
  • 19 Olympic gold medals (6 women, 13 men)
  • 28 Paralympic gold medals (10 women, 18 men)
  • Two Tour de France winners
  • Cycling transformed from a minor sport with minimal interest to huge national prominence
  • Unprecedented growth in participation and membership – over one million more people took up recreational cycling during this period
  • Transformation from organisational failure to award-winning status as a governing body
